You Gotta Serve Somebody

Bob Dylan’s song “You Gotta Serve Somebody” says:

You may be the heavyweight champion of the world
You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls

But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes
Indeed you’re gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody

Even if we like to think we are self-made, self-reliant, self-sufficient, we all come to realize we have somebody in our lives we answer to. When we’re young it is our parent. When we go to school it is our teacher. When we join a team it’s our coach. When we get a job it is our boss.

The Bible tells us of a wise king who decided to serve God.

Solomon loved the Lord and followed all the decrees of his father, David.”

1 Kings 3:3

Every day we make decisions that reflect who or what we have chosen to serve.

These decisions show what is sovereign in our lives.

What has supreme worth to us? What do we worship – because we all worship something.

The apostle Paul says,

we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God

2 Corinthians 1:9
